Is shredded coconut the same as coconut flakes?

Coconut flakes (or flaked coconut) are a larger version of dried shredded coconut. Instead of being grated, boiled coconut meat is cut into substantial flakes that are then dried.

What can I substitute for shredded coconut?

Recipes calling for shredded or desiccated coconut are often doing so to add texture as well as flavour. In these instance shredded or desiccated nuts or dried fruits will work well in most recipes. Ground almonds, crushed pistachios or pecans can be used instead of desiccated coconut.

What’s the difference between desiccated coconut and shredded coconut?

Shredded coconut is “grated” bits of coconut, usually in long thin strips/strands. They are then dried out, but still, retain more moisture than desiccated coconut. Desiccated coconut is finely ground coconut, rather than bigger strips.

Where can I find shredded coconut?

The baking aisle is where you should find shredded coconut. It will probably be where the nuts and chocolate chips are. Sometimes shredded coconut is in the natural food aisle, but you may also want to look in the bulk section of the store. Last place to check is the frozen aisle.

Can you turn coconut flakes into shredded coconut?

Turn the coconut upside down to collect the water in a glass. Hold the coconut with a towel and firmly tap it with a hammer or meat mallet. The shell should crack in half. Remove the coconut shell (husk), then use the fine grater to shred the coconut flesh (the white part) onto a lined baking sheet.

How do you make shredded coconut?



Preheat oven to 70C (150F) With a hammer, break the coconut until cracks. With a vegetable peeler peel the outer dark skin from the meat. Wash the pieces to get the nice and white shreds. Spread on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and bake for approximately 10-15 minutes.

Can you buy shredded coconut in the UK?

You can find it in some stores in London that sell American ingredients (Panzer’s in St John’s Wood usually have it and may be able to mail order – see link below). It is also available from some on-line specialists (we have included a suggestion below but others are available).

Can I use flaked coconut instead of shredded?

Coconut usually comes flaked or shredded, but the difference between them is almost imperceptible, making them essentially interchangeable for most recipes.
